invasion/symbiosis (I) for instrument and electro-acoustic sound (2010)
invasion/symbiosis (I) invites an instrumentalist to leave the comfort of indoor shelter and venture outside. Once outdoors, thye interact with any surrounding environmental sounds, sometimes joining and other times opposing, ultimately creating a sonic ecosystem in which the instrument is an integral component. The performer’s sounds are recording during several such interactions, and played back over multiple channels in concert, creating a new sonic environment. In this setting the instrumentalist responds to and interacts with these sounds in a similar manner to their previous outdoor forays, though in this case dealing with their own sounds, reactions and history. During such a performance, a resonance of the original environment may be heard, though filtered through the performer’s understanding and memory of it.
